ROBERT IVAN LACKERSTEIN
Project Aircraft
My client had a beautiful circular oak framed Gymnasium built and fancied an aircraft themed art installation suspended in the void of the dome. He sourced a pair of hand-made scaled down French remote controlled planes. The plan was to make up a frame mirroring the Octagon shape of the building from which to hang the planes.
I carried out a sympathetic restoration on the planes and fitted the holding brackets that would allow the planes to be hung.
Almost finished
Making up the holding brackets.
The brackets were drilled and polished the idea being that they would look like part of the aircraft.
The frame was laser cut in two sections then welded along with its fixing brackets. Aluminium angle sections were then cut and bolted in place. The holes were bevelled using a router then the frame was polished.
The domed ceiling prior to the sky being painted.
Right angle brackets made from stainless steel were bolted to the oak frame and the cables which run through polished tubes gives the look of rams. In the picture you can see the pulleys and rope which we used to pull up the frame.
